Hearing Services
“Vision and hearing are our two most important senses and with age both can gradually fail.  Since vision and hearing are so crucial to our quality of life, I believe it is critical that our practice take care of both senses.  That is why our doctors are pleased to care for your hearing needs as well.”  Charles L. Calhoun, M.D.
Over time, many individuals fail to realize that they have a hearing problem.  Hearing loss, often like vision loss, can gradually erode these senses and impact your quality of life and interactions with others.  We have seen, and research shows, that many patients experience some sort of vision and hearing loss together.  For a period of time now we have been coordinating hearing and vision care to the great satisfaction of many of our patients.  If your hearing is not what you think it should be, then please make an appointment with our hearing services department.
West Georgia Eye Care Center offers comprehensive hearing testing using state-of-the-art hearing evaluation equipment in a comfortable sized room.  No closed in booths.  The testing includes a comprehensive audiogram with air, bone, and speech testing along with tympanometry, acoustic reflex and evoked auditory testing.  Your hearing evaluation is conducted by a Board-Certified, State of Georgia licensed hearing instrument specialist in coordination with our board certified physicians.
Our State of Georgia licensed Hearing Instrument Specialist is Ms. Viola Best. She is Hearing Specialist Viola BestBoard Certified by the National Board for Certification in Hearing Instrument Sciences and has 14 years of professional experience assisting patients with their hearing health. She is a member of the Georgia Hearing Aid Society. Prior to joining West Georgia Eye Care Center, Viola was in private practice for 14 years serving patients in Columbus, LaGrange and Manchester, Georgia.
Her family has served the greater West Georgia and East Alabama region for over 30 years providing professional hearing services. Viola is a caring and dedicated professional who enjoys enriching the lives of others.

About Hearing Loss
Hearing loss is the most common and most frequently undiagnosed, untreated medical condition in our patient population.  25+ million Americans suffer from some form of hearing loss, including 1 in 4 older than 65.  Hearing loss can affect anyone at any age, even children. The causes of hearing loss vary from a simple wax build-up in the external ear canal to a more serious, non-syndromic sensorineural hearing loss.
People with hearing loss usually have put off getting tested and helped.  As with your vision, early intervention into the reasons for hearing loss and corrective action can most often restore a high quality of life with good hearing again in the senior patients we serve. Our hearing services, like our vision services, have literally transformed lives.  Ninety percent (90%) of all patients with hearing loss can be tested and treated right here within our practice under the professional oversight of our physicians.  For all others, we can provide timely referrals to other specialty care within the local area.

Hearing Loss Impacts the Quality of Life
Most often a spouse or loved one is the first to detect a hearing problem. Untreated hearing loss influences all aspects of everyday life.  It limits your ability to be involved with friends and family, to interact in public places and to stay active and aware.  Because hearing loss is usually gradual, the individual affected is frequently unaware. In addition, a person may be resistant to the idea of having a hearing loss due to the lack of public awareness and the stigma attached to hearing aids.

Two Main Types of Hearing Loss

There are two main types of hearing loss that effect our patient population. It is important to know what kind of hearing loss is causing you to not be able to hear as clearly as you would like. The first main cause of hearing loss is called a Sensorineural Loss.  Sensorineural Loss is known as "nerve deafness," is the most common form of hearing loss. It is caused by damage to the nerves of the inner ear. Although Sensorineural Loss is not curable, most people (90%) suffering from this type of loss can be helped with hearing aids. Sensorineural and Conductive losses can sometimes act together to form a Mixed loss.
The second main cause is conductive loss is said to be an injury or problems with the bones, eardrums or membranes within the ear that causes conductive loss. This type of loss is treated surgically or medically and often includes the use of hearing aids. We maintain excellent referral relationships with a number of the region's finest ENT physicians.

Signs of Hearing Loss Include:
  • Difficulty hearing conversations in crowded places
  • Ringing or other noises in your ears
  • Others telling you that you don't seem to hear them
  • Others complaining that you watch TV with the volume too high
  • Frequently needing to ask others to repeat themselves
  • Feeling that people are mumbling in everyday conversations
  • Difficulty understanding women or young children's voices
  • Trouble knowing where sounds are coming from
Hearing Aids
For some people hearing aids are seen as a distraction and they worry about how they are going to look. Well, with advancements in technology hearing aids range from small to large and offer an array of treatments for mild to severe hearing conditions. Improvements are constantly being made to help improve the lives of those with hearing loss. Investment in a hearing aid will help you to lead a more satisfying life. Once it has been established that a hearing aid will be beneficial to you, our Hearing Instrument Specialist will go over which style will work best for your lifestyle.  Hearing aids come in many different shapes, sizes and colors. When deciding which hearing aid is right for you, you should keep in mind that you're choosing a hearing aid is based primarily on hearing not looks. There are five main styles of hearing aids:
  • Completely in the canal
  • In the canal
  • In the ear
  • Behind the ear
  • Open fit.
The Hearing Instrument Specialist will go over the benefits for each one so that you can make the choice of which one will work best for you. Treatment with new digital technology allows hearing devices to provide the patient with significant, noticeable improvement in hearing clarity and understanding ability even in noisy places.  New "open fit" technology produces a more "natural" sound quality (no more plugged-up, echo or down in the barrel sound). 100% digital signal means crisp, clear, HD Quality sound all the time.
Our technologically advance hearing aids are completely programmable to your hearing loss – even if it changes in the future.  Our hearing aids come with outstanding program capabilities such as multi-memories, directional mics and fully automatic.  "Ready to wear" hearing aids can be fitted on the same day as your hearing evaluation.  New modern designs are virtually invisible and so comfortable you may even forget that you are wearing one.

Insurance and Financing
Some insurance companies will help with the hearing instrument costs. We will verify your insurance for you and work directly with your insurance company so that you do not have to pay up front and wait for reimbursement.  We do offer patient financing  to include up to 18 month interest free financing.
